Pray for Libya.
Africa’s deadliest storm in recorded history struck eastern Libya on Sunday and Monday, leaving thousands dead and an already struggling society faced with a mammoth recovery effort. The worst flooding from Storm Daniel was in the port city of Derna (population 90,000), where the failures of the nearby Derna and Abu Mansur dams, both about 50 years old allowed a wall of water to rip through the heart of the city along the Wadi Derna, which is a dry riverbed during much of the year. Carving a path some 100 meters (320 feet) wide, the floodwaters inundated some buildings and caused others to collapse.
Derna – City of deadly zone
Torrential rain caused two dams to burst near the city of Derna in Libya, killing thousands and washing whole neighborhoods out to sea.
- The Aftermath: The Libyan authorities curbed access to much of Derna as they struggled to handle the arrival of volunteers and people desperately seeking missing loved ones.
- A Chaotic Scramble: Efforts to respond to the devastation resulting from the collapse of the dams were unorganized and uncoordinated, aid group and residents said.
- A Lack of Action: Experts and academics had known for years that the dams protecting Derna were in danger of giving way. But the government largely ignored their warnings.
